Erosion & Sediment Control
As a Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control, (CPESC), and Certified Professional in Stormwater Quality, (CPSWQ), James Kay is currently an instructor of Erosion and Sediment Control for both Vancouver Island University as well as the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia. He currently serves as President of the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the International Erosion Control Association and is the Area Representative for CPSWQ. He has had the opportunity to present at both the British Columbia Water and Waste Association Annual Conference as well as the ESC Metro Vancouver conference.

Sustainable Engineering
The good news is that there is no big secret surrounding sustainable engineering. It all comes back to basic principles and logic. The challenge is that it touches on a wide range of topics and specialties that have been practiced for years, so getting people to think about it critically and try new approaches is always a challenge.
One of the more visible opportunities in sustainable engineering is within the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, (LEED), Green Building Rating System. Though civil engineering accounts for a mere three points, one of the few prerequisites sets a high standard for Erosion and Sediment Control, and keeps projects, designers, and contractors accountable.
Canada Green Building Council
I am currently exploring a wide range of sustainable engineering initiatives, such as Built Green, Rainwater Harvesting, Stormwater Management, Low Impact Development, Greywater Recycling, Decentralized Wastewater Treatment, among others. If you share similar interests or can help with these pursuits, I'd very much like to work with you.
